A recent multinational cohort study found that the quality of a plant-based diet can impact the risk and progression of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and related complications.
High adherence to a healthy plant-based diet was associated with a lower risk of IBD, while an unhealthy plant-based diet increased the risk. Furthermore, diet quality influenced disease outcomes and genetic analysis suggested the protective effects of a healthy diet. Lead study author Jie Chen and colleagues emphasized the need for specialized dietetic counseling in IBD management and highlighted the importance of differentiating between beneficial whole-food, plant-based diets and processed plant-derived foods.
