In a randomized clinical trial adults with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) who adopted a Mediterranean diet experienced significant symptom improvement within just two weeks compared with those receiving traditional dietary advice. At six weeks, 62% of patients following the Mediterranean diet achieved a 50-point or more reduction in the IBS Symptom Severity Scale versus 42% of those in the control group, with a mean reduction of –101.2 versus –64.5 points. Participants adhering to the Mediterranean diet also showed higher intake of fiber, folate, magnesium, and oligosaccharides. Both groups reported improved mood and quality of life, though without between-group differences. These findings suggest the Mediterranean diet is a viable, evidence-based first-line dietary intervention for IBS management in clinical practice.
