A recent study funded by the National Institutes of Health demonstrates that measuring trans-epidermal water loss (TEWL) at previously healed diabetic foot ulcer sites may help predict the likelihood of wound recurrence. High TEWL levels were associated with a 2.7 times greater risk of developing a recurrent ulcer. Diabetic foot ulcers, common among individuals with peripheral neuropathy, can lead to severe complications if left untreated. Integrating TEWL measurement into routine wound care protocols may help prevent ulcer recurrence and reduce associated risks.
