Lower HCQ Dose Maintains Lupus Remission, Study Finds
With the use of Hydroxychloroquine at stable doses of 200 mg/day, more than 70% of inception patients with systemic lupus erythematosus in our cohort achieved prolonged remission.
A study in Lupus Science & Medicine investigated the dosing of hydroxychloroquine (HCQ) in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). Stable doses of 200 mg/day or 3.0 to 3.5 mg/kg/day were found to be effective in maintaining prolonged remission in SLE patients, with 72% achieving remission for 5 consecutive years. Notably, HCQ dosing didn't differ between patients with different baseline disease activity, suggesting consistent dosing may be effective regardless of disease severity. The study confirmed that the mean daily HCQ dose remained stable over time, averaging 194.6 mg/day, and retinal toxicity, a known adverse effect of long-term HCQ use, was not reported in patients treated with stable 200 mg/day doses.
