Fewer physicians reported plans to reduce clinical hours or leave their organizations in 2024 compared with peak pandemic levels, although workforce instability remains a concern, according to a large national survey study. Researchers analyzed responses from more than 37,000 physicians across 160 US healthcare organizations and found that intent to reduce clinical hours declined from 26% in 2022 to 23% in 2024, while intent to leave organizations dropped from 20% to 15%. Female physicians, part-time physicians, and those with more than 20 years in practice showed higher workforce reduction risks. Physicians consistently identified workflow inefficiency, staffing instability, compensation, and administrative burden as major concerns.
