On February 12, Takeda Pharmaceuticals announced that the FDA approved a budesonide oral suspension (Eohilia) to treat patients aged 11 years and older with eosinophilic esophagitis. The novel formulation—which has thixotropic properties and was designed to alleviate esophageal inflammation and dysphagia—was approved after researchers demonstrated positive results in two studies. Patients aged 11 to 56 years were randomly assigned to receive either 2 mg of budesonide oral suspension or placebo twice daily for 12 weeks. Compared with those who received placebo, patients who received budesonide oral suspension were more likely to achieve histologic remission in the first study (53.1% vs 1%) as well as the second study (38.0% vs 2.4%); patients treated with budesonide oral suspension also experienced either low-grade or no dysphagia by the last 2 weeks of both studies. Further, the absolute change from baseline in the patient-reported Dysphagia Symptom Questionnaire combined score was a respective –10.2 vs –6.5 in the first study and –14.5 vs –5.9 in the second study. The most common side effects in patients receiving budesonide oral suspension included respiratory tract infections, gastrointestinal mucosal candidiasis, headaches, gastroenteritis, throat irritation, adrenal suppression, and erosive esophagitis.
