Researchers reported that high-voltage electrical pulses to the small intestine significantly improve type 2 diabetes, comparable to gastric bypass surgery. The non-thermal pulsed electric field treatment triggers regeneration of healthy cells in the duodenum, helping control blood sugar levels and leading to significant improvements in insulin sensitivity, beta-cell function, blood sugar control, and body weight in participants. A pivotal trial is underway to test the procedure in overweight individuals with type 2 diabetes inadequately controlled by non-insulin medications, with potential applications for non-overweight patients.
