Research indicates that one hour of uninterrupted smartphone use significantly reduces blink rate and increases inter-blink intervals in young adults, contributing to visual fatigue. A study with 30 participants, averaging 22 years of age, measured these effects while engaging in e-book reading, video watching, and social media browsing. The findings highlighted a drastic decline in blinking—by 61% for e-books, 54% for videos, and 59% during social media use, ultimately leading to discomfort and fatigue. The lead author, Bhanu Priya Dandumahanti, called for further investigation into longer durations and diverse demographics to fully understand digital eye strain.
