A 46-year-old anesthesiologist has been apprehended by law enforcement after allegedly assaulting his spouse at a popular hiking location in Hawaii, according to police reports. He is facing attempted second-degree murder charges.
Gerhardt Konig, MD, was taken into custody by Honolulu police on Monday evening "after he was located in an escape on foot near Pali Highway" following an incident at Pali Lookout on Oahu earlier that day. According to the Honolulu Police Department, Konig allegedly "tried to push her off the trail and struck her in the head with a rock."
His 36-year-old spouse was transported to a nearby emergency room in serious condition. Honolulu Emergency Medical Services reported that she sustained "serious head injuries and multiple facial injuries" and stated that "she was assaulted with closed fists and an object."
Maui Health, where Konig practices anesthesiology in Kahului, released the following statement: "We have been made aware of the allegations against Gerhardt Konig, MD. Dr. Konig has been suspended from the Medical Staff pending investigation. Dr. Konig is employed by an independent entity contracted to provide medical services at various medical facilities on Maui, including Maui Memorial Medical Center. Maui Health takes these concerns and the safety of its patients very seriously and will cooperate with authorities as appropriate."
Dr. Konig was previously an attending anesthesiologist at a women's hospital and an assistant professor of anesthesiology and bioengineering at the University of Pittsburgh Schools of Medicine and Engineering.
