A recent randomized clinical trial demonstrated that a laboratory-formulated essential oil mouthwash significantly reduced halitosis, plaque, gum bleeding, and bacterial markers in obese patients with chronic periodontitis compared to a placebo. The study enrolled 45 adults who self-reported halitosis and used the mouthwash, which contained natural ingredients such as lemon and grapefruit seed extract, for four weeks. Findings indicated notable improvements in oral health, suggesting that essential oil mouthwashes might provide an effective, non-pharmacological alternative for managing oral malodor and inflammation. The study highlighted the need for further research to explore longer-term effects and comparisons with standard treatments like chlorhexidine.
