Broccoli Sprout Extract in Prediabetes: Microbiota and Glycemic Variability

In a recent study published in Nature Microbiology, researchers found that participants with prediabetes who had a higher abundance of the specific gut microbiota gene BT2160 experienced a greater reduction in fasting blood glucose when treated with broccoli sprout extract (BSE). The study involved a randomized trial with 74 drug-naive participants with impaired fasting glucose and demonstrated a mean fasting glucose reduction of 0.2 mmol/L in the BSE group compared with placebo. Adverse effects, primarily gastrointestinal symptoms, were reported more frequently in the BSE group. The study also highlighted the potential role of gut microbiome in mediating the metabolic response to BSE in prediabetes.
