In a mixed-methods survey of 1,473 US surgeon-parents, researchers found that female surgeons experienced higher rates of obstetric complications than partners of male surgeons; however, this difference was no longer significant after adjusting for lack of workplace support, identifying workplace culture as a key mediator. Qualitative findings indicated that physical job demands, stigma surrounding pregnancy, and inadequate parental leave policies contributed to adverse pregnancy experiences, highlighting modifiable institutional factors that may improve maternal outcomes among surgeons.
