A significant study involving 203 women with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) revealed that over 52% had poor vertebral trabecular bone quality, linked to older age and type 2 diabetes as major risk factors. Conducted by Jose Jorge Gomez-Camarena, MD, at the Universidad de Guadalajara, the study employed dual X-ray absorptiometry scans to measure bone quality. It found that women with low trabecular bone scores (TBS) were generally older and had higher incidences of diabetes and menopause. Surprisingly, corticosteroid use did not correlate with low TBS, suggesting metabolic conditions play a more critical role in bone quality among these patients.
