A randomized clinical trial tested the impact of inflammatory exposure on depressive symptoms in older adults with insomnia, revealing that those with insomnia experienced significantly heightened depressed mood compared to controls. Conducted with 160 participants aged 60 and above, the study administered low-dose endotoxin to assess its effects on mood using various depression rating scales. Results indicated a statistically significant increase in depressive symptoms in insomnia participants, highlighting the need for monitoring during inflammatory challenges.
