New research examining 1003 young adults shows persistent reductions in working memory-related brain activation among heavy cannabis users, independent of recent use or substance dependence diagnosis.
A study examined over 1000 young adults and found that heavy lifetime cannabis use was associated with decreased brain activation during working memory tasks, persisting even after accounting for recent use. The reduced brain activation identified negative outcomes related to heavy cannabis use in healthy young adults, particularly affecting working memory. Recent cannabis use was also associated with poorer cognitive performance, emphasizing the need to educate users about potential cognitive consequences.
