Otolaryngology surgeons frequently experience medium to high ergonomic strain and increasing intraoperative pain during head and neck surgeries, according to a prospective study. Researchers evaluated 17 surgeons across 80 operations using Rapid Upper Limb Assessment scores and pain ratings collected before and after procedures. Nearly 40% of ergonomic assessments fell within medium to high risk ranges, while pain increased significantly during more difficult cases. Longer procedures were associated with worsening ergonomic strain, particularly among surgeons aged 40 years and older. Surgeons also reported workflow disruptions caused by discomfort, including position changes, distraction, and occasional breaks, highlighting concerns about long-term occupational health and surgical longevity.
