The American College of Physicians has issued guidance on cannabis use for chronic noncancer pain, noting the need to counsel patients about the benefits and harms. The ACP noted that there is limited clinical evidence supporting the effectiveness of cannabis and cannabinoids for pain relief. There are specific patient subgroups for whom harms likely outweigh benefits, such as adolescents and young adults, frail patients at risk for falling, those with past substance use disorders, and pregnant or breastfeeding patients. Inhaled cannabis for pain management should not be recommended.
