Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center announced that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has granted Orphan Drug designation to Canget BioTekpharma’s novel drug candidate FL118 for the treatment of patients with pancreatic cancer. The agent—which works by binding to the DDX5 protein—has already demonstrated antitumor activity in preclinical studies involving pancreatic and colorectal cancer cells. FL118 is derived from camptothecin, an organic compound isolated from the bark and stem of a tree native to China. Research led by Fengzhi Li, PhD, Associate Professor of Oncology in the Department of Pharmacology and Therapeutics at Roswell Park, led to the discovery of FL118.
