Researchers found an estimated 1,262 pickleball-related eye injuries in 2024, nearly triple the number reported in prior years. Using data from the National Electronic Injury Surveillance System (2005–2024), researchers identified 73 ocular trauma cases—representing a national estimate of 3,112 injuries—most commonly periocular lacerations (35%), corneal abrasions (16%), and iritis (8%). Severe trauma such as retinal detachment or orbital fracture occurred in fewer than 5% of cases. Injuries primarily affected men (56%) and adults aged 50 years or older (70%), with balls (43%) and falls (28%) as the leading causes. The authors recommended developing standardized eye protection guidelines for both recreational and competitive pickleball play to reduce preventable ocular injuries.
