Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) were detected in 95% of beer samples, with higher concentrations associated with contamination in breweries’ municipal water sources. Perfluorosulfonic acids, especially perfluorooctanesulfonic acid, were the most frequently detected. Three beers exceeded the maximum contaminant level for perfluorooctanoic acid, and one for perfluorooctanesulfonic acid. The study analyzed 23 beers across different categories and found strong positive correlations between beer PFAS concentrations and municipal water PFAS concentrations.
