A randomized clinical trial examined patient comprehension of information on mifepristone, an abortion and miscarriage management medication, and found that including quantitative risk and benefit information in medication guides improved patient comprehension without reducing readability. The study compared comprehension scores of different medication guide formats and found that the decision-critical version, which included numerical data, resulted in significantly higher comprehension scores among patients compared with the FDA's proposed format and vendor materials. Adding quantitative risk and benefit estimates increased participants' comprehension and their ratings of the quality of the scientific evidence and usefulness of the communication. The study also highlighted the importance of providing essential information for safe and effective medication use, especially for drugs that depend on patient self-management and are subject to widespread misinformation.
