Recent data presented at the 2025 ACAAI meeting showed that patients with eczema, asthma, or other atopic conditions faced higher postoperative risks after implant-based breast reconstruction and bone graft procedures. Among more than 10,000 women undergoing reconstruction, atopic skin disease was linked to increased implant infections, rupture, capsular contracture, and revision surgery. In a cohort of more than 38,000 adults receiving bone grafts, atopic disease was associated with higher rates of infection, osteomyelitis, mechanical loosening, and hardware removal. The findings suggest that immune dysregulation in atopic disease may impair healing and elevate complication risk.
