In a small randomized study, an inexpensive HIV antiviral, lamivudine, shows promise as an alternative to intravitreal injections for diabetic macular edema (DME). The oral drug significantly improved visual acuity and may offer a more convenient and cost-effective treatment option for patients, particularly in underserved populations.
