Recent research led by Dana Tasabehji from the University of Iowa reveals that bariatric surgery significantly improves liver health more effectively than endoscopic procedures in patients suffering from obesity-related liver disease, particularly metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD). In comprehensive studies, Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB) showed resolution of liver fat in up to 95% of patients, with improvements noted as soon as six months post-surgery. Additionally, vertical sleeve gastrectomy (VSG) also demonstrated strong efficacy, though adjustable gastric banding (AGB) and endoscopic methods showed lesser effects. Overall, surgical interventions are recommended for lasting liver health improvements.
