Primary Prevention Aspirin Use Declines Post-2019 Guidelines

"Following landmark clinical trials and changes in guideline recommendations, self-reported primary prevention aspirin use decreased among older adults and adults with low ASCVD risk for whom aspirin was not recommended, but also decreased among adults with higher ASCVD risk for whom aspirin may still be recommended."

A new study analyzed data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) and found that the use of aspirin for primary prevention has significantly decreased among U.S. adults, following changes in clinical guidelines and recommendations. The decline in aspirin use was most pronounced among older adults and those with low atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) risk. Disparities in aspirin use reduction were observed across demographic groups, and the study also highlighted stable rates of secondary prevention aspirin use among patients with known ASCVD throughout the study period. The research revealed limitations, including reliance on self-reported aspirin use and falling response rates in NHANES surveys.
