Mount Sinai announced that Ismali El-Hamamsy, MD, PhD, was appointed President of the Heart Valve Society at the 2024 Heart Valve Society Annual Meeting. An internationally renowned expert in aortic surgery, Dr. El-Hamamsy currently serves as Director of Aortic Surgery and the Mount Sinai Randall B. Griepp, MD, Professor in Cardiovascular Surgery at the Icahn School of Medicine at the Mount Sinai Health System. He has focused his research on aortic valve and root replacement as well as the Ross procedure for aortic valve reconstruction. He has worked to better understand the efficacy and long-term outcomes of the Ross procedure—especially among patients with active lifestyles and female patients planning to become pregnant—and mentors surgeons on safely performing the procedure. In his new role, Dr. El-Hamamsy hopes to foster collaborative research initiatives between cardiologists, surgeons, and researchers; increase the society’s educational offerings for cardiologists and surgeons; bolster awareness campaigns; advance best practices; and develop novel strategies to reduce the burden of heart valve disease across the world. “I am very excited and honored to lead the Heart Valve Society and further consolidate its role as a unique society dedicated to valvular heart disease,” concluded Dr. El-Hamamsy.
