Researchers in England found that adults hospitalized with influenza had higher rates of newly diagnosed diabetes mellitus following discharge compared with matched nonhospitalized controls and patients hospitalized with sepsis. In the retrospective cohort study of 13,710 influenza-hospitalized patients without preexisting diabetes, the incidence of diabetes was 12.5 cases per 1,000 person-years, with the greatest risk occurring within 90 days following discharge. Patients with preexisting diabetes risk factors, obesity, hypertension, oral corticosteroid exposure, and critical care admission had higher rates of subsequent diabetes diagnosis.
