A cohort study on adult trauma patients in Western Australia found that a significant proportion of patients developed new mental health disorders following trauma admission, leading to increased risks of hospital readmission, suicide, and all-cause mortality over long-term follow-up. Factors associated with post-trauma psychiatric conditions included younger age, unemployment, being single, divorced, or separated, Indigenous ethnicity, lower socioeconomic status, and traumatic brain injury. Targeted follow-up and intervention strategies are recommended, especially for high-risk populations.
