A recent study examined the long-term effects of antidepressant use on body weight. The research involved a cohort of 3,127 Spanish adults with an average age of 55.6 years. The study revealed that different patterns of antidepressant use were associated with significant weight gain, with multivariable analyses demonstrating that all trajectories of antidepressant use were linked to greater weight gain compared to never users. In light of the global obesity epidemic and widespread antidepressant usage, the researchers recommended integrating weight management and metabolic monitoring into depression follow-up guidelines alongside antidepressant prescriptions.
