A recent study investigated the efficacy of adjunctive lithium therapy in adolescents aged 13 to 17 suffering from severe emotional dysregulation, characterized by mood swings and impulsivity. Over six months, the lithium group demonstrated a significant reduction in symptom severity compared to the control group, though differences diminished by the 12-month mark. Despite higher occurrences of adverse effects in the lithium group, adherence rates were comparable. Researchers emphasize the potential of lithium as a supplementary treatment option for this demographic, while also noting the study’s limitations.
