A UK cross-sectional study of 195 patients found that lower adherence to a Mediterranean-type diet and frequent red meat intake were linked with more severe periodontitis. Elevated interleukin-6 remained associated with disease severity following adjustment, while high-sensitivity C-reactive protein did not. Patients with higher Mediterranean diet adherence showed fewer deep periodontal pockets and less attachment loss. Researchers noted the cross-sectional design, hospital-based sample, and self-reported dietary data as limitations.
