Researchers conducted an international consensus process to develop standardized lay descriptions of painful temporomandibular disorders for use in Global Burden of Disease disability weighting, addressing a key gap that has limited inclusion of temporomandibular disorders in global health estimates. The resulting description highlights pain location, quality, and functional impact, with severity stratified by intensity, frequency, and duration, providing a framework to better quantify the burden of this common chronic orofacial pain condition.
