Uncorrected hearing loss correlates with a faster decline in memory and cognition among older adults, particularly those experiencing loneliness despite having social connections. Based on data from 33,741 individuals aged 50 to 99 across 12 European countries, the study highlighted that increased hearing impairment negatively impacted cognitive scores, with the most substantial effects seen in lonely individuals. Notably, each additional unit of hearing loss was linked to significant declines in memory recall. The findings underscore the importance of addressing both hearing impairment and loneliness to enhance cognitive health in later life.
