A cross-sectional survey of 251 adults with chronic midfacial pain found that over-the-counter decongestants provided more self-reported relief for patients with nonrhinogenic facial pain than for those with chronic rhinosinusitis. Other medications, such as intranasal corticosteroids, oral antihistamines, caffeine, and pain relievers, showed similar results between groups. The study, led by researchers at Duke University School of Medicine, is the first to assess over-the-counter treatments for sinus headache in both conditions. The authors noted limitations, including single-center design and self-reported data, emphasizing that perceived symptom relief does not necessarily indicate efficacy.
