Research conducted by Phillip Jenkins, PhD, and colleagues suggests that specific vocal acoustic features can help identify benign vocal fold lesions. By analyzing voice recordings from 176 participants across five North American sites, significant differences in harmonic-to-noise ratio (HNR) and pitch were noted between benign lesions, laryngeal cancer, and individuals with no voice disorder. However, distinctions between lesions and other voice disorders proved difficult. The study highlights the potential of HNR variability as a biomarker for vocal fold lesions and emphasizes the need for further research.
