A study of over 1,300 adolescents who underwent anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction revealed a 30% incidence of second injuries within 10 years, with high rates of meniscus and ligament injuries at the time of surgery. Most injuries occurred during soccer, handball, hockey, and basketball, with similar reinjury rates between male and female participants. Despite complications, the majority returned to sport, but elite-level competition declined. Knee function improved after surgery, but ongoing joint damage and reinjury risks were significant, emphasizing the need for long-term injury prevention strategies for adolescents participating in high-impact sports.
