Opticals have recently been targeted for high-end frames. Lenscrafters and Sunglass Huts have been targeted previously, but on February 21, Optical Illusions—an optometry practice in San Ramon, California—saw an “all-out brawl” over Cartier, Gucci, and Tiffany frames that the thieves looted to resell on the black market.
“I [saw] four criminals in the practice," Will To, OD, said in KTVU Fox 2’s report. "Two of them [attacked] my staff close to the front door, the other two [were] looting things off of the shelves."
Dr. To has always encouraged his staff to not engage in dangerous situations such as these, but when one of the intruders attacked a patient and an optician, the optician, who was trained in Krav Maga, put himself between the attackers and the patient.
According to the CCTV footage from the practice, Dr. To was able to pull a hood off one thief and a shoe off another, which San Ramon police are now analyzing for DNA.
After the scuffle, the thieves made off with a dozen glasses, but a dozen others were left damaged.
KVTU Fox also reported that the thieves were seen casing the practice earlier in the day and repeatedly asked for Dior frames, which Optical Illusions does not carry.
Conexiant hopes to reach Dr. To regarding his experience with any increased security since the incident, and will update this article if we receive comment.
