This pilot case–control study compared periodontal status and inflammatory burden between 15 pregnant women with type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) and 15 healthy pregnant women. The study found that pregnant women with T1DM had higher plaque index, more bleeding on probing, and larger deep and total bleeding periodontal wounds compared with healthy pregnant women. HbA1c levels were also significantly higher in the T1DM group. The authors concluded that pregnant women with T1DM may be more prone to increased periodontal inflammatory burden during pregnancy.
