A study published in JAMA Neurology finds that prenatal exposure to the organophosphate pesticide chlorpyrifos impacts brain structure and motor skills in children aged 6 to 14. Researchers from northern Manhattan and the South Bronx observed thicker cortices in regions associated with exposure, alongside reduced white-matter volumes. Additionally, cognitive assessments highlighted adverse effects on fine motor speed and programming, particularly in the nondominant hand. The investigation accounted for various demographic and social factors to ensure reliability.
