In a large Swedish prospective cohort followed for up to 25 years, higher long-term intake of high-fat cheese and cream was associated with a lower risk of all-cause dementia, while low-fat dairy products and most other dairy foods showed no significant associations. Among 27,670 community-dwelling adults aged 45 to 73 years at baseline, consumption of at least 50 g/day of high-fat cheese and at least 20 g/day of high-fat cream was linked to reduced risks of all-cause dementia, with high-fat cheese also associated with lower risks of vascular dementia and Alzheimer disease among apolipoprotein E ε4 noncarriers. Dementia outcomes were ascertained through national registry data and analyzed using multivariable Cox regression models adjusted for demographic, lifestyle, cardiometabolic, and dietary factors.
