A recent Dutch study explored the link between postinfectious autoimmune encephalitis and long-term cognitive or neurologic deficits in adults recovered from community-acquired bacterial meningitis. Assessing 118 adults, researchers found that only 2% exhibited neuronal autoantibodies, suggesting that autoimmune mechanisms are not a significant factor in persistent neurological symptoms. Instead, the evidence points to acute brain injury from the infection itself as the likely cause. This study highlights the need for further research in high-risk populations.
