Nearly one-third of adults with mild traumatic brain injury continued to experience symptoms one month after injury. The HeadSMART II study identified nine early emergency-department characteristics—such as female sex, higher body mass index, falls, vehicular crashes, or prior depression and anxiety—associated with persistent post-concussion symptoms. Headache remained the most common complaint, and early evaluation was emphasized to identify patients at risk for prolonged recovery.
