New survey results from YouGov Profiles shed light on oral care habits among U.S. adults, offering a detailed look into brushing frequency, dental issues, and product preferences. The data reveal that 30% of Americans brush their teeth at least once a day, while 51% maintain the recommended practice of brushing twice daily. Notably, 10% of individuals brush three or more times daily.
In addition, mouthwash (59%) and dental floss or tape (53%) were among the most commonly used oral care products, according to the respondents, whereas water flossers (14%), interdental brushes (9%), and teeth whitening strips (8%) were less commonly used, according to the results in YouGov Profiles.
Female respondents were more likely to use dental floss (58% vs. 48%) but less likely to use toothpicks (25% vs. 31%), compared with male respondents. Compared with electric toothbrushes, manual toothbrushes were preferred for regular use (64% vs. 23%). The participants also noted that they value the qualities of their toothpaste such as cavity protection and teeth whitening over other aspects—including breath freshening, plaque and decay prevention, miltiprotection formulas, tartar control, and desensitization.
