As Halloween approaches, families across the country are gearing up for a festive season filled with costumes, decorations, and an abundance of candy. However, dental experts are cautioning against excessive sugar consumption, which can lead to tooth decay and other oral health issues.
To help families maintain a healthy smile amid the sweet treats, Kelsey Loveland, DDS, DMD, MS, of Celebrate Dental & Braces, offered essential tips for navigating the holiday.
Dr. Loveland advised starting the festivities with good oral hygiene: “Brushing your teeth prior to enjoying candy can help create a barrier that makes it harder for sugar to cling to your teeth, minimizing the risk of decay.” This simple step can significantly reduce the impact of sugar on dental health.
In addition, she recommended eating a nutritious meal prior to diving into the candy bowl. “Enjoy a healthy meal beforehand to curb cravings and reduce the likelihood of excessive snacking on sweets,” she explained.
When it comes to choosing treats, Dr. Loveland suggested opting for dark chocolate instead of milk chocolate. “Dark chocolate typically contains less sugar and is rich in beneficial antioxidants, making it a healthier choice,” she indicated.
To balance out the sugar, families can enjoy crunchy fruits and vegetables like apples and carrots after indulging in sweets. “These foods help clean your teeth naturally and stimulate saliva production,” Dr. Loveland noted.
For those with leftover Halloween candy, Dr. Loveland suggested a candy detox schedule. “Designate specific days to enjoy leftover candy and then dispose of the rest. This approach helps prevent prolonged sugar exposure and reduces temptation,” she advised.
Additionally, she highlighted the importance of mindful snacking. “Instead of grazing on candy throughout the day, set specific times to enjoy treats. This limits sugar exposure and encourages more mindful eating,” she highlighted.
When sipping sugary drinks or smoothies, using a straw can also help minimize sugar contact with teeth, reducing cavity risks. “It’s a simple trick that can make a difference,” Dr. Loveland added.
Finally, she recommended storing leftover candy out of sight, such as in a high cabinet, to lessen temptation and prevent frequent snacking.
“Halloween is a time for fun and treats, but it’s essential to prioritize dental health amid the festivities,” Dr. Loveland emphasized. “By making mindful choices, such as eating a nutritious meal beforehand and selecting treats wisely, families can enjoy their candy while minimizing the risk of cavities. Remember, maintaining good oral hygiene practices, even during indulgent times, is key to preserving a healthy smile,” she concluded.
