Is Postoperative AF Changing Anticoagulation Decisions?

October 9, 2025
Nearly half of CABG patients developed new-onset atrial fibrillation (AF) within one year, but the arrhythmia burden declined to nearly zero after 30 days.
Ninety-five percent of AF episodes occurred within the first postoperative month, with limited late recurrences.
No strokes occurred among patients with AF, and adverse cardiac event rates were similar between those with and without AF.
Most postoperative AF episodes were asymptomatic and missed by conventional monitoring methods.
Findings question the need for long-term anticoagulation in patients with transient, low-burden AF following CABG.
