A comprehensive meta-analysis reveals that human papillomavirus (HPV) infection is associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease and coronary artery disease.
The analysis, encompassing nearly 250,000 patients, demonstrated a 40% elevated risk of cardiovascular disease and an even greater doubling of the risk of coronary artery disease among HPV-positive individuals, independent of traditional cardiovascular risk factors. The study's lead researcher, Stephen Akinfenwa, MD, emphasized the need for further investigation into the mechanistic underpinnings of this association and the potential cardiovascular benefits of HPV vaccination.
