Research from the Southern Community Cohort Study has highlighted that fast walking significantly reduces mortality rates independently of leisure-time physical activity levels. Led by Lili Liu, MPH from Vanderbilt University Medical Center, the study examined 79,856 adults aged 40 to 79. Findings revealed that just 15 minutes of fast walking per day correlated with a marked decrease in mortality risk, particularly from cardiovascular diseases. The study's methodology involved extensive baseline assessments and long-term mortality tracking through the National Death Index.
