Two recent reviews highlighted a consistent link between binge alcohol intake and new-onset atrial fibrillation (AF), a pattern known as Holiday Heart Syndrome. Across 11 studies involving up to 400,000 adults, consuming five or more drinks within two hours reliably preceded AF, with episodes emerging within 24 to 36 hours. Physiologic effects included sympathetic surges, shortened atrial refractory periods, reduced vagal tone, and transient drops in left atrial emptying fraction. Whiskey and beer carried higher risk than wine, and women drinking spirits showed increased susceptibility. AF often resolved with abstinence but recurred with renewed heavy intake. Both reviews reported no conflicts.
