The biotechnology company Nanowear announced that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has cleared its novel artificial intelligence (AI)-powered wearable device SimpleSense to monitor high blood pressure, according to a report from Fierce Biotech. The device is designed to fit around a patient’s chest without using an inflatable cuff and contains cloth-based sensors to track electrocardiogram data and heart sounds continuously and remotely. The device is validated to record changes of over 15 mmHg in systolic blood pressure and 10 mmHg in diastolic blood pressure. Nanowear hopes its technology can help provide patients with an at-home diagnostic for hypertension and eliminate inaccurate readings that may be influenced by patient anxiety in clinical settings. “Accelerated by the pandemic, the market has been eagerly searching for reliable, clinical-grade wearables [to attain] at-home [blood pressure monitoring],” concluded Venk Varadan, MBA, co-founder and Chief Executive Officer of Nanowear.
