Research indicates that patients aged 70 and older are at a significantly higher risk for developing deep vein thrombosis (DVT) when treated for lower limb cellulitis. A retrospective study conducted on 158 patients found that age surpasses other risk factors, with an adjusted odds ratio of 13.5 for those aged 70 and older. While traditional indicators such as inflammation and obesity were examined, they did not correspond with increased DVT risk. Elevated D-dimer and C-reactive protein levels were noted across all patients but did not show significant differences concerning DVT presence. The findings emphasize the need for heightened vigilance for DVT in older adults. In light of these results, further research is necessary to explore the mechanisms linking age and DVT in cellulitis.
